U.S. President Donald Trump has disclosed that he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone on Wednesday.
During their conversation, both leaders discussed efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump described the call as “lengthy and highly productive.”
“We have also agreed to have our respective teams begin negotiations immediately, starting with a call to President Zelenskiy of Ukraine to inform him of our discussion, which I will be doing right now,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.
Last Sunday, the U.S. president stated that progress was being made in efforts to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
However, he had previously refrained from sharing details about any communication with Putin.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump acknowledged that he had been in contact with the Russian leader, marking the first officially confirmed conversation between a U.S. president and Putin since early 2022.
