The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Imo State Council has praised a high court ruling that halted the attempted sale of its secretariat on Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, by individuals claiming leadership within the union.
In a press statement co-signed by State Chairman Precious Nwadike and Secretary Ori Martin, the council described the judgment delivered by Justice C.A. Ononeze Madu as a milestone that upheld the dignity and integrity of journalism in Imo State.
“We celebrate the landmark judgment that nullified the earlier decision transferring ownership of the Imo NUJ Secretariat to Enedo General Services. This victory underscores the resilience of journalism as a profession and restores our pride as development agents,” the statement read.
The NUJ accused former officials, including Chris Akaraonye, Ifeanyi Nwanguma, and ex-national president Chris Isiguzo, of colluding to sell the secretariat without members’ consent. It also alleged that Enedo General Services employed unethical tactics to intimidate union members during the legal proceedings.
While commending Governor Hope Uzodinma for remaining neutral, the union criticized his information commissioner for allegedly backing the accused individuals. It further called on the judiciary to address corrupt practices by certain officials, including magistrates and court clerks, to protect the integrity of the judicial system.
“This judgment is a win for justice and accountability. Moving forward, we will ensure those involved in undermining the union face the full force of the law,” the release concluded.
