Wrong teaching of Islamic studies contributed to emergence of Boko Haram – Gov Zulum

Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has attributed the Boko Haram insurgency to the improper teaching of Islamic studies in the state.

Zulum made this statement while inaugurating a summit on Almajiri Education System reform in Borno on Wednesday. He explained that the summit aims to transform the Almajiri educational structure—a traditional Islamic learning system common in northern Nigeria.

To address issues linked to Almajiri education, Zulum highlighted that the Borno State Government has established the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board, which has introduced a standardized curriculum for Sangaya and Islamic schools.

“The Sangaya Reform is a crucial step forward. It provides Almajiri students with a brighter future by integrating western education, vocational training, and literacy skills into Almajiri and Islamic schools,” he noted.

He further emphasized, “Distinguished guests and esteemed educators, the government plans to harmonize both informal and formal education systems, creating a high-quality integrated Sangaya model to support college and university admissions.”

The summit, he said, serves as a forum for participants to address issues, exchange insights, and suggest practical solutions to challenges facing the Almajiri education system.
