Reform bill: Tinubu rejects NEC advice, insists on legislative process

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that the Proposed Tax Reforms Bill currently in the National Assembly will proceed through the legislative process. This statement was made on Friday through his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

It’s worth noting that the National Economic Council (NEC) had earlier advised the executive to withdraw the bill due to strong opposition from some northern stakeholders who feel it is detrimental to their region. In response, Onanuga encouraged anyone with concerns about the bill to share their feedback during public hearings.

“President Tinubu appreciates the NEC members, especially Vice President Kashim Shettima and the 36 State Governors, for their counsel. He believes that the legislative process, already underway, offers a chance for input and necessary adjustments without needing to withdraw the bill. While urging the NEC to let the process unfold, President Tinubu welcomes further discussions with key stakeholders to address any concerns while the National Assembly reviews the bill for passage,” the statement noted.
