Prominent Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has criticized Aisha Yesufu, the convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, for her advocacy of women’s liberation.
During a television appearance, Kuti expressed his disagreement with Yesufu’s views on women’s freedom, condemning her for promoting the liberation of Nigerian women while wearing a hijab. He argued that adopting Islamic or Christian practices results in a departure from African identity.
In a post on his official page, Seun stated, “It’s our African heritage that’s influenced your European ways. That’s why Aisha Yesufu and I clashed on TV; she was talking nonsense, and I called her out.”
He continued, “Once you embrace Christianity or Islam, you’ve forsaken your Africanness. That woman in a hijab claiming to want to liberate Nigerian women—she should first liberate herself from her hijab.”
