A shooting incident in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, on Thursday morning has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities, according to sources.
One eyewitness, a student, noted that the shooting occurred around 9:15 a.m. in Ifite Awka, an area primarily populated by students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. The source suggested that the violence may be linked to cult activities.
Just last Sunday, at least 12 individuals were killed in a cult-related shooting in nearby Nibo. Another source indicated that Thursday’s shooting took place near the back gate of Unizik, close to Amansea Road.
One witness remarked, “Gunmen just shot a guy a few minutes ago at Ifite, Awka. He’s lying lifeless.” An additional eyewitness, a lecturer, reported seeing seven deceased individuals in the vicinity and had to turn back from her lectures.
The exact number of victims remains unclear. State Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga could not confirm the incident but mentioned that a police team is on the scene and more information will be provided soon.
Ikenga also issued a statement saying the command has intercepted videos and voice notes of individuals planning to incite violence in Awka. He stated, “Anambra State Police Command is investigating these intercepted clips threatening violence.”
He reassured the public that the police are committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the protection of human rights. In response, police and security forces have increased patrols and enhanced surveillance to uphold public safety and order in the state.
