The Igbo-Biafra Nationalists (IBN) have urged Southeast political leaders to prioritize the sustainable development of the region.

In a statement made in Owerri on Friday, IBN spokesperson Edoziuno Chukwunonso emphasized the importance of this commitment.

“We, the Igbo-Biafra Nationalists and the Indigenous People of the Igbo Nation for Self-Determination, urgently call on our political representatives to commit to sustainable development.

“Our vision, grounded in responsible governance and accountability, drives us to advocate for the prosperity and well-being of the South-East region.

“The foundation of our movement is the firm belief in human rights, sustainable development, and responsible governance. These principles are not abstract; they are vital for a thriving and equitable society.

“As custodians of these values, we are responsible for ensuring that democracy benefits every part of our region.

“Sustainable development is not just a policy agenda but a moral imperative. It requires a balanced approach that meets present needs without compromising future generations.

“This includes economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social inclusion. Our political representatives must focus on these areas to build a resilient and vibrant South-East.

“The dividends of democracy—justice, equality, and prosperity—must become tangible realities for our people. To achieve this, we call on our political leaders to adopt transparent and inclusive governance practices.

“This involves engaging with civil society, upholding the rule of law, and implementing policies that promote economic diversification, infrastructure development, and environmental conservation.

“Accountability is essential. We demand that our leaders maintain the highest standards of integrity and transparency. Corruption and mismanagement undermine democracy and hinder progress.

“Therefore, we call for strong mechanisms to monitor and evaluate our representatives’ performance, ensuring they remain true to their mandate.”

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has insisted that the May 30th Biafra Day celebration must hold despite threats by Nigeria security agents.

MASSOB said there will be a sit-at-home exercise in commemoration of the 57th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra Republic by General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

According to a statement signed by Comrade Uchenna Madu, Leader of MASSOB, made available to DAILY POST, all schools, banks, markets, public offices, motor/ Keke parks, air/seaports and other corporate bodies shall be closed to commemorate the event.

“We know that the overzealousness, partiality and brutality of Nigeria security agents will be displayed in couple of days in Biafra land towards May 30th.

“No amount of their intimidating patrols and show of force will ever deter MASSOB and other pro-Biafra groups from honouring our past heroes and friends of Biafra on May 2024,” the statement read.

MASSOB assured that there would be no public processions, rally or forceful enforcement on the citizens to adhere or obey directives involuntarily.

Madu added, “As we march into 30th May 2024, we advice all Biafrans and Ndigbo to join in the celebration, in remembering the day His Excellency Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu made the historic declaration of Biafra.

“Every household shall light up a candle in their homes in the spirit of Biafranism. Stay in your house and pray while you light your candle on 30th May.

“As we preach non-violence, we shall maintain the principle of non-violence in all of our approach towards Biafra actualization and restoration.
“As May 30th anniversary celebration is sacrosanct, MASSOB acknowledged the conscious awareness and synergies among the pro-Biafra groups and other organizations in Biafra land towards the preparations and enthusiastic spirit in readiness for the celebration of Biafra declaration anniversary.”
