A representative of Awka South 1 constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Henry Mbachu, has expressed dismay at the widespread poverty in Nigeria. Following a visit to several markets in his constituency, the lawmaker observed that the escalating poverty affecting a significant number of Nigerians poses a serious threat to the country’s national security, stability, and unity if left unaddressed.
Mbachu advocated for a more sustainable approach to addressing the escalating poverty rate in the country. He stressed the need for a shift in focus from extravagant lifestyles, suggesting that affluent individuals should redirect their resources towards initiatives that uplift impoverished families, rather than indulging in luxury and expensive drinks.
In his plea, Mbachu stated, “Well-to-do individuals should move beyond ‘dorime’ and 21-year-old liquor. The cost of one bottle of exotic drink can alleviate excruciating poverty in many families. This is the time to change our approach.”
The legislator emphasized the importance of creating additional employment opportunities for the less privileged and implementing economic and institutional reforms to enhance income levels. Furthermore, he called on young people to actively support the government in combating corruption by actively participating in monitoring projects and contributing to the development and growth of their local communities.
