No African artist bigger than Burna Boy – Grammy organisers

The Recording Academy, the organizers of the Grammy Awards, have asserted that Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, is unmatched in the Afrobeats genre or among African artists. This statement was issued in a congratulatory message on the Academy’s website on Saturday, directed at Burna Boy and other nominees for the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammys.

The Grammys highlighted Burna Boy’s significant influence in the music industry, noting that he is currently in his “imperial era.” They emphasized his collaborations with global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber. Additionally, the Academy acknowledged Burna Boy’s achievement of securing his first UK No. 1 album this year with “I Told Them…,” a classic hip-hop-influenced album featuring appearances from 21 Savage, J. Cole, RZA, and GZA. In the statement, the Recording Academy declared, “There’s not a bigger star in Afrobeats, or even the whole of Africa itself, than Burna Boy.

He nabbed two consecutive Best Global Album GRAMMY nods for his albums Twice as Tall and African Giant, and he’s also collaborated with global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.” DAILY POST previously reported that Burna Boy’s track ‘City Boys’ was nominated in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys. The song is set to compete with other nominations in the same category, including Davido and Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Asake and Olamide’s ‘Amapiano,’ and Tyla’s ‘Water.’ In addition to the Best African Music Performance category, Burna Boy received nominations in three other categories at the 66th Grammys: ‘Sitting On Top of the World’ featuring 21 Savage (Best Melodic Rap), ‘I Told Them’ (Best Global Music Album), and ‘Alone’ (Best Global Music Performance).
