At the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on October 3, 2023, and broadcast on October 10, 2023, Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy had a disappointing evening. He ended up losing in all seven of his nominated categories.
Kendrick Lamar bested Burna Boy in the Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year categories. Burna Boy also came up short in the Hustler of the Year category, losing to 50 Cent, and in the Best Collaboration of the Year category for his track ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage, with Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life’ taking the prize.
Additionally, Burna Boy lost the Best Hip Hop Video category for ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World,’ which went to Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Just Wanna Rock,’ and the Song of the Year category for the same song.
In contrast, Ghanaian talent Black Sherif secured a win in the Best International Flow category, surpassing nominees such as South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and the UK’s J Hus and Central Cee, among others.
