An investigation has been initiated by the Cameroonian police regarding allegations of match-fixing involving the President of the country’s Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o.
The former Barcelona and Chelsea striker is accused of playing a significant role in facilitating the promotion of the Cameroonian football club, Victoria United, to the first division.
A recent audio leak has indicated that the 42-year-old was part of a larger group involved in manipulating games in Cameroon’s second-tier league.
As reported by The Guardian, a letter from the Cameroonian police confirms that they are currently conducting interviews with several key witnesses associated with this match-fixing group.
In the transcribed recording, Eto’o was heard saying, “Don’t worry, we will give you your three points and we will suspend the referee. Opopo [Victoria’s nickname] must go up to the first division. This is our goal. This is our federation. Victoria United will go up.”
However, Eto’o has vehemently denied these allegations, explaining that he was conversing with a friend who is involved in football investments and aims to improve his club’s standing in Cameroon. Eto’o asserted that he was merely reassuring his friend that he would do everything possible to prevent any refereeing errors against his team.
