Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has called on Nigerian Christians to use the Easter season as a time to pray for compassionate and empathetic leadership in the country.
In a statement released on Saturday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar, Obi emphasized that true leaders are those who consider the impact of their decisions—and their silence—on the people they serve.
He encouraged Nigerians, particularly his supporters known as Obidients, not to lose hope despite current hardships, assuring them that “our Redeemer lives” and that a New Nigeria is still achievable.
“Easter is a celebration of the ultimate sacrifice Jesus Christ made for humanity,” Obi said. “It is a fitting moment to ask God for leaders who reflect Christ’s compassion and care.”
He lamented the growing insecurity and other challenges facing the country, attributing much of it to what he described as a lack of responsibility from leaders who are disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
“Nigeria is blessed with abundant natural and human resources,” Obi said, “but without leaders who are sensitive and responsive, the nation cannot reach its full potential. We deserve better than what we’re currently experiencing.”
