The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State have expressed differing opinions on the serious allegations made against the suspended state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The controversy began after Dr. George Nwaeke, former Head of Service in Rivers State, made explosive claims against Governor Fubara on Saturday, further heightening political tensions in the state.
Nwaeke, who recently resigned from Fubara’s administration, alleged that the governor orchestrated the 2023 bombing of the State House of Assembly complex to prevent his impeachment by lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
He claimed to have witnessed a bag of money being given to Edison Ehie, a former Assembly leader and now Fubara’s Chief of Staff, to carry out the attack on the Assembly Complex along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Additionally, Nwaeke accused Governor Fubara of planning to attack oil facilities in the Niger Delta, allegedly to create political instability and damage the image of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to him, Fubara openly stated that, as the chief security officer of Rivers State, he and his counterpart in Bayelsa State controlled the pipelines and could influence militant activities when necessary.
Nwaeke claimed Fubara aimed to start the attacks from non-Ijaw areas to make the destruction of oil infrastructure appear widespread rather than limited to Ijaw territories.
He also alleged that Fubara held secret meetings with key opposition figures to support a Northern candidate, possibly Bala Mohammed, for the 2027 presidential election.
Amid the political firestorm, Nwaeke’s wife, Mrs. Florence Nwaeke, raised concerns about her husband’s safety, suggesting he could be under duress to make such allegations.
The accusations sparked intense debates online, with supporters of Fubara and Wike clashing over the claims.
PDP: Nwaeke Must Provide Proof, He’s Being Used
Speaking to DAILY POST, Sydney Gbara, the Publicity Secretary of PDP, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
He argued that Nwaeke was being used by Fubara’s political opponents to discredit the suspended governor and must present concrete evidence to support his claims.
Gbara questioned why Nwaeke, who was part of the government when the alleged events occurred, did not resign earlier if he truly believed such crimes were committed.
He further stated that the allegations were a desperate attempt to implicate key figures in Fubara’s administration.
APC: The Allegations Are Serious, Must Be Investigated
On the other hand, Ikenga Chibike, the spokesman for the Chief Tony Okocha-led APC, insisted that the allegations were too serious to be ignored.
He described Nwaeke as a credible figure who was privy to Fubara’s inner workings, urging security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation.
According to Chibike, the allegations have caused significant concern and must be treated with the urgency they deserve.
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara has dismissed the claims, stating that Nwaeke had been compromised.
