Twelve inmates escaped from a correctional facility in Kogi State during a jailbreak in the early hours of Monday.
The Kogi State Government confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.
Fanwo praised the swift response of security agencies to the jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, where 12 inmates managed to escape.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” he reassured citizens that the State Government is taking firm measures to prevent future occurrences.
He further stated that the government is collaborating with security agencies to uncover the circumstances surrounding the escape.
“The claim that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage is highly suspicious.
“A thorough investigation is necessary to determine the exact circumstances of the jailbreak, apprehend the escapees, and identify any potential collaborators within the system,” Fanwo remarked.
Additionally, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to work closely with the Federal Correctional Center and other security agencies to prevent similar security lapses in the future.
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies through logistics and other necessary resources to enhance their effectiveness.
While investigations continue, authorities assured residents that the situation is under control.
“There is no need for panic. Citizens should go about their daily activities as usual, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Fanwo added.
