The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is preparing to welcome more prominent politicians, including governors and lawmakers, after the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Confirming the development, SDP National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, stated that El-Rufai’s move has sparked growing interest among politicians from various parties.
“El-Rufai’s defection has triggered a political shift. More key figures from the APC and other parties are expected to join,” Gabam said.
Although he did not reveal specific names, speculation suggests that former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, may also be considering the switch.
However, Fayemi has denied reports of his defection, affirming his continued allegiance to the APC.
“My attention has been drawn to reports about my defection. I remain a founding member of the APC, and that has not changed,” Fayemi stated.
Despite this, analysts believe El-Rufai’s exit reflects deepening divisions within the APC, amid growing concerns over internal democracy and leadership struggles.
Gabam reiterated that the SDP remains committed to grassroots democratic participation and has no intention of merging with any other political party.
“The SDP is not aligned with the idea of merging political parties. That would only lead to chaos,” he added.
