Pope Francis spends 3rd night in hospital over bronchitis

Pope Francis has spent a third consecutive night in the hospital without any complications, according to a Vatican spokesman on Monday.

The 88-year-old pontiff reportedly had a restful night, ate breakfast, and read the morning newspapers.

Francis has been hospitalized in Rome since Friday due to bronchitis, as confirmed by the Vatican. Concerns over his health grew in recent weeks after his voice weakened during public appearances, and he made fewer trips outside his Vatican residence.

Health Concerns and Doctor’s Advice

Media reports suggest that doctors had long recommended hospitalization for treatment. The pope, who is originally from Argentina, has a history of respiratory issues, as part of his right lung was removed during his youth.

Doctors have now ordered “absolute rest”, according to the Vatican.

Hospital Stay and Canceled Engagements

While the Vatican initially indicated that Francis would remain in the hospital for five days, speculation is growing that his stay could be extended.

As a result, he has had to cancel all scheduled appointments over the weekend and the start of the week.

The latest Vatican health update stated that his condition remains stable.
