‘Privacy reasons’ – Canada breaks silence on visa snub

The High Commission of Canada in Nigeria has stated that it cannot disclose the reason for denying a visa to Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, citing privacy regulations.

Musa was set to travel to Canada for an event but was refused a visa by the Canadian embassy in Nigeria.

Speaking at the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) in Abuja on Thursday, Musa confirmed that both he and some of his colleagues were denied visas.

“Every disappointment is a blessing. Yesterday, I was supposed to be in Canada for an event honoring our veterans, particularly those injured in battle.

“We were invited as a team, but while some members were granted visas, others, including myself, were denied. It’s very disappointing,” Musa said.

Responding via a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Canadian High Commission acknowledged the reports but declined to comment on the visa refusal.

“The High Commission of Canada in Nigeria is aware of media reports concerning the planned travel of senior officials to Canada.

“However, due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide any comment on the visa applications of specific individuals,” the statement read.
