Nigeria’s leading telecommunications company, MTN, has rolled back its 200% tariff increase on the 15GB data plan.
The company announced the decision in a statement shared on its official X account on Thursday.
Earlier, on Tuesday, MTN had implemented a 200% price hike on the 15GB data bundle along with other data plans. However, this increase exceeded the 50% telecom tariff adjustment approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
In a Thursday update, MTN apologized to Nigerians for the unexpected price surge.
“To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, we know you’re upset.
“We understand how frustrating it must have been to wake up to a 200% increase on your favorite data plan.
“We could give plenty of explanations, but honestly, all that is just talk. We admit it—this was a mistake.
“In this season of love, don’t stay mad at us. Please forgive and forget. You matter to us, and we’ll always show you how much,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, in response to the tariff hikes, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday urged its members and Nigerians to boycott telecom services in protest.
