Anarchy has arrived LP, party function without authority – Okonkwo rubbishes Abure

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign during the 2023 election, has claimed that the opposition party is in a state of anarchy.

Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, the actor-turned-politician asserted that the party currently lacks leadership, dismissing the authority of National Chairman Julius Abure.

According to DAILY POST, key stakeholders, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, had previously removed Abure due to internal disputes within the party.

However, on October 8, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja reinstated Abure as the party’s leader, ruling that the LP’s national convention in Nnewi—which re-elected him—was valid and adhered to all Nigerian legal requirements. This decision further deepened the party’s leadership crisis.

Frustrated by the ongoing turmoil, Okonkwo announced his resignation from the party on Tuesday.

Explaining his decision, he told Channels TV, “Anarchy has taken over the Labour Party. As I always say, anarchy is the absence or non-recognition of authority. Right now, there is no governing authority in LP.”

He further argued that no court had explicitly declared Abure as the party’s legitimate chairman.

“Each time they go to court, they sidestep the convention issue. Instead, they request orders allowing them to field agents under Abure’s leadership. This is the deceptive and manipulative approach they have taken to maintain control over the party,” Okonkwo stated.
