The Adamawa State House of Assembly has approved a report from its Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development aimed at eliminating discrimination against persons with disabilities.
On Wednesday, the Assembly reinforced its commitment to disability rights by adopting the committee’s report on a bill to repeal the Adamawa State Disability Rights Commission Law No.14 of 2016 and replace it with the Adamawa State Persons with Disability Law Commission.
The proposed legislation seeks to promote the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in society while prohibiting all forms of discrimination against them.
The decision to adopt the report was reached during Wednesday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Bathiya Wesley.
Lawmakers unanimously supported the report, which was presented by the Chairperson of the Committee on Women Affairs and Majority Leader of the Assembly, Kate Raymond Mamuno.
Following the adoption, the Speaker instructed the Chairman of the Rules and Business Committee to schedule the bill for a third reading on the next legislative day.
DAILY POST reports that Speaker Bathiya Wesley, who lost an arm in an accident before joining the Assembly, is widely regarded as the only person with a disability currently leading a state legislature in Nigeria.
