Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized the indefinite postponement of Nnamdi Kanu’s trial and his prolonged detention.
Sani described the continued incarceration of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader as unjust, emphasizing that delaying justice indefinitely is not a solution.
In a post on X, the former senator stated, “Keeping someone in prolonged detention while indefinitely delaying their case is completely unfair. I understand the concerns and emotions surrounding this issue, but injustice cannot bring about justice.”
Drawing from his own experience, Sani added, “A problem cannot be solved by stopping the clock. Having endured long-term imprisonment myself, I understand the pain and anguish of isolation. Until one has lived through confinement, they will never truly grasp its impact.”
His remarks followed the decision of Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court to adjourn Kanu’s trial sine die (indefinitely).
Justice Nyako had previously recused herself from the case after Kanu questioned her impartiality and demanded her withdrawal. However, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, declined to reassign the case and instructed Nyako to continue presiding over the trial.
Kanu remains in detention, facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Nigerian government over his agitation for the creation of Biafra.
