Reps urge FG to provide relief for Niger state explosion victims

The House of Representatives has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian and Social Development to swiftly provide relief materials to victims of a tragic fuel tanker explosion in Niger State.

The explosion, which reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities, was attributed to the driver’s excessive speed and the hazardous curve at the junction.

This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance presented by Hon. Adamu Tanko, who expressed deep concern over the devastation and suffering caused by the incident.

Beyond providing relief, the House called for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate the root causes of such accidents and propose preventive measures.

Additionally, lawmakers urged the Nigeria Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance awareness campaigns for tanker drivers to reduce future occurrences.

The House also addressed the increasing risk of gas explosions nationwide, following a motion of urgent national importance raised by Hon. Aderemi Oseni.

Oseni emphasized the dangers posed by substandard and expired gas cylinders, identifying them as a key factor behind frequent explosions.

In response, the House urged the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigerian Customs Service to enforce strict regulations ensuring that only certified gas cylinders, trucks, and kits enter the country.

Lawmakers further called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch an awareness campaign educating Nigerians on how to recognize and avoid substandard gas cylinders and kits.
