The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Abdulganiyu Jaji, has reported that property valued at approximately ₦67.1 billion was lost to fire incidents in 2024.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Jaji revealed that over 100 lives were lost due to fire outbreaks during the same period. However, the FFS successfully saved property worth ₦1.94 trillion in 2024.
Highlighting the Service’s efforts, Jaji noted that they responded to numerous emergencies, saving 30,890 lives despite the recorded losses.
He warned that fire incidents could increase during the harmattan season due to low humidity and urged fuel station operators, petrol tanker drivers, gas station personnel, gas cylinder users, and the general public to adhere strictly to safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents.
Jaji emphasized the Service’s commitment to improving its operations through proactive measures, advanced strategies, and operational efficiency. He mentioned plans to enhance awareness and response times using modern technologies, including the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) and the N-Alert Fire Alarm App.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving the purchase of advanced firefighting equipment and the remodeling of the National Fire Academy. Jaji also urged Nigerians to support the repeal and re-enactment of the Fire Service Act of 1963, stating that this would significantly enhance the Service’s ability to deliver effective and efficient services.
