TCN Confirms FCT Blackout, Begins Power Rationing Monday

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced daily power outages from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting Monday, January 6, to Saturday, January 20, 2025, in areas such as Kubwa, Karu, and Nyanya. The outages are due to the relocation of electricity towers to facilitate a road dualisation project.

This confirmation follows an earlier notice by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) regarding the relocation of power infrastructure. TCN’s General Manager, Ndidi Mbah, expressed regret for the inconvenience but highlighted the importance of the work to improve power supply reliability.

TCN explained that the project involves relocating eight 132kV and 33kV towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line on the Outer Southern Expressway route. The relocation will require dismantling and constructing towers and restringing power cables to resume bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from the Gwagwalada Substation.

As a result, electricity supply will be rationed for AEDC customers in Kubwa, Karu, Mararaba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and the Apo Mechanic area. Other affected locations include parts of Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and Alaita axis.

“While relocating the transmission towers is necessary for the road dualisation project, TCN sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused by the planned outages and assures that power supply will be restored once the work is completed,” the company added.

Earlier, the AEDC had issued a notification on Friday, stating that parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would experience power outages due to the Federal Capital Development Agency’s (FCDA) road dualisation project along the Apo axis.

Affected areas include Lugbe and its environs, Airport Road, Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, Eye Clinic, Indoor Complex, Christ Embassy Church, and American International School.

Other impacted locations include Spring Court, American Embassy Quarters, EFCC Headquarters, Coca-Cola, Railway, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), parts of Apo, Gudu, Gbazango, Kubwa, Bwari, Jahi, Jabi, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, Keffi, and surrounding areas.
