5,000 Adamawa teachers yet to receive November salary

Over 5,000 teaching and non-teaching staff under the Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Management Board, Yola, have not received their November 2024 salaries. These workers constitute more than half of the approximately 9,000 staff on the board’s payroll.

The delay is attributed to an ongoing screening exercise initiated by the Adamawa State Government. Typically, workers in the state are paid by the 23rd of each month.

Addressing the issue, Mohammed Abubakar, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), explained that the affected staff include not only teachers but also non-academic personnel such as cleaners, gardeners, plumbers, and matrons. He noted that some of these workers failed to submit their required certificates on time.

Abubakar revealed that over 4,500 teachers have so far submitted their certificates, and Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is expected to authorize the payment of the outstanding salaries. He urged workers who have yet to submit their documents to complete the process promptly, emphasizing that the union is working to resolve challenges related to the screening exercise.

The NUT chairman also called on teachers to remain committed to their duties, reminding them of their responsibility to provide services in exchange for their wages.

The screening directive, issued by Governor Fintiri in October 2024, required all civil servants to submit their certificates for verification. The governor explained that the exercise was necessary to identify unqualified individuals holding positions and drawing salaries they are not qualified for. This initiative aims to ensure service quality and create job opportunities for qualified young professionals.
