The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and founder of the Kukah Centre, Most Reverend Mathew Kukah, has expressed optimism that the controversial tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration could curb the financial recklessness of the elites.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Bishop Kukah emphasized the need for the Federal Government to ensure that the ongoing reforms contribute to Nigeria’s development.
He acknowledged the criticism surrounding the bills, which have sparked concerns across the country. Some critics argue the reforms are skewed against the northern region and could impose an additional burden on Nigerians.
“Nigeria is a vibrant country filled with talented individuals eager to excel,” Kukah said. “However, our challenge lies in the inability of states to harness this energy and channel the vision and aspirations of their citizens, often leading to violence.”
He continued:
“While I am still educating myself about the tax reform bills, I am excited about the potential they hold. Any meaningful reform must address this nation’s dysfunction and set it on a path to progress.
“These reforms should put an end to the financial recklessness that has left Nigerians—despite living in a resource-rich country—sidelined as the elites continue to mismanage resources irresponsibly.
“This should mark the beginning of a journey toward fiscal discipline and efficiency, laying the groundwork for the growth and development of the country we all hope for,” Kukah concluded.
