Hunger, economic deprivation killing Nigerians – NANS tells Tinubu

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the severe hardships, particularly widespread hunger, facing Nigerians.

The association expressed concern that economic deprivation is worsening the plight of citizens. In a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta, NANS Senate Clerk Abdulyekinn Odunayo lamented that the current administration has subjected Nigerians to unnecessary poverty and hunger.

The statement highlighted that the simultaneous removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the national currency under the Tinubu-led government has deepened economic despair, escalated hunger, and significantly raised the cost of living for millions.

While acknowledging that some students have benefited from the administration’s student loan program, Odunayo urged the government to initiate comprehensive economic reforms to deliver the good governance promised by the President.

The statement read:
“There is an urgent need for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to implement measures to combat hunger, poverty, and the widespread impoverishment in the country.

“Nigerians are groaning under the immense weight of the current economic crisis. The situation has never been this dire.

“The dual impacts of fuel subsidy removal and naira floating have struck Nigerians deeply.

“Many families can no longer afford even a single meal a day, let alone three. The freefall of the naira against the dollar and other international currencies has compounded the suffering.

“As representatives of Nigerian students, we earnestly urge the President to recalibrate and enhance his economic policies to provide immediate, medium-term, and long-term relief to Nigerians.

“Living conditions must improve, as survival has become increasingly difficult for many Nigerians.”
