The Edo State Government announced on Friday that over 200 vehicles are currently unaccounted for.
Kelly Okungbowa, chairman of the committee established by Governor Monday Okpebholo to recover government vehicles, disclosed this in Benin City while updating reporters on the committee’s progress.
Okungbowa revealed that within 24 hours of the committee’s inauguration, three vehicles had been recovered—a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses.
He noted that one of the recovered buses contained palliatives, including bags of garri and rice, intended for distribution to residents of Edo State.
The chairman called on the public to provide additional information that could assist in locating the missing vehicles. He assured whistleblowers that they would be handsomely rewarded for accurate and verifiable tips.
“Following our inauguration, we pledged to carry out Mr. Governor’s mandate to recover all government vehicles unlawfully in private possession. Within just 24 hours, we are pleased to report the recovery of one Hilux and two Toyota Hiace buses from private custody,” Okungbowa stated.
He further emphasized the committee’s commitment to retrieving all government vehicles, stressing that these assets belong to the people of Edo State.
“This is not private property; these vehicles are owned by the citizens of Edo. It is unacceptable for individuals to claim government property as their own,” he added.
Okungbowa urged former government officials and other individuals in possession of government vehicles to return them within 48 hours.
