The government of Equatorial Guinea has announced that former National Financial Investigation Agency head, Baltasar Engonga, will face legal action following a sex tape scandal that has sparked public outrage and concern. Engonga, who was dismissed earlier this year, now faces misconduct charges due to explicit videos involving high-profile individuals.
In a weekend statement, Information Minister Jerónimo Osa Osa criticized Engonga’s actions, stating they violate the “ethical and moral values” of Equatorial Guinean society. The government revealed that the scandal includes hundreds of videos showing Engonga in intimate encounters with various women, some married to prominent officials, including politicians.
Local outlet Ahora EG reported that some videos feature the wives of high-ranking officials, such as the president’s sister and the wife of the Director General of Police. Many encounters appear to have been recorded without consent, raising privacy concerns.
Vice President Teodoro Mangue pledged to prevent similar behavior within government institutions, warning that officials caught engaging in such activities would face severe penalties. The government plans to install surveillance cameras in public offices and has suspended officials implicated in the scandal, with a thorough investigation underway to assess possible legal liabilities.
The scandal was uncovered during an unrelated fraud investigation involving Engonga, where authorities found over 400 explicit recordings in his office. In response, the government is also evaluating potential public health risks and the impact on the nation’s reputation.
