A senior Hamas official has called for an end to Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip and a renewed effort toward Palestinian statehood following Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president.
Hamas Political Bureau spokesperson Basem Naim conveyed this message in an interview with Newsweek, expressing hope that Hamas would receive support in achieving freedom and independence.
Naim stated, “The election of Trump as the 47th U.S. president is primarily an American concern. However, Palestinians seek an immediate end to the violence against our people, particularly in Gaza, and look to secure our legitimate rights to freedom, independence, and the establishment of an autonomous state with Jerusalem as the capital.”
He criticized the ongoing “unconditional support” for Israel, claiming it jeopardizes the security and stability of the region.
Trump, a Republican, defeated Democrat Kamala Harris. During his first term, he maintained a strong alliance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is now engaging in multiple conflicts with the Iran-supported Axis of Resistance, sparked by a Hamas-led offensive against Israel in October 2023.
