The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended Oguejiofor Nnaemeka Simon Peter, a 29-year-old Thailand returnee, for attempting to import 13.30kg of heroin valued at over N3.192 billion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. According to a statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, the arrest took place on Monday, October 7, 2024.
Oguejiofor, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, Anambra State, had traveled from Thailand on October 3, 2024, and was stopped after his luggage, originally routed to Accra, Ghana, was rerouted to Lagos. His attempt to pick up the bags as rush luggage failed as NDLEA operatives discovered heroin hidden in six backpacks packed within two large suitcases.
The suspect admitted he was paid $7,000 to deliver two parcels in Lagos and four in Accra.
In a related development, NDLEA intercepted opioids worth N22.7 billion at three seaports, including 32.6 million tramadol pills and 1.45 million bottles of codeine-based syrup. Additionally, in Onitsha, Anambra, a suspect was arrested with 50,000 tramadol tablets, while in Edo State, NDLEA seized over 1,000kg of cannabis.
