Tragedy now Nigeria’s companion – Obi mourns Nasarawa varsity students

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed sadness regarding the deaths of three students from Nasarawa State University in Keffi, NSUK, who lost their lives in a stampede during a palliative distribution event. In a statement shared on his social media platform, Obi described the incident as yet another distressing example of the daily struggles endured by Nigerians. He criticized the escalating hunger crisis in the country, emphasizing that such tragedies should not occur in a nation as abundantly endowed as Nigeria.

Obi lamented the frequency of distressing events in the lives of Nigerians, citing the recent incident involving NSUK students as a poignant example. He highlighted the alarming increase in hunger within the nation, asserting that it continues to claim innocent lives. Despite Nigeria’s wealth in both human and natural resources, with vast fertile lands for agriculture, Obi expressed dismay that hunger and poverty persist, leading people to take extreme risks to survive.

The former presidential candidate stressed the urgency of addressing food insecurity in Nigeria, advocating for a shift from consumption-oriented policies to production-focused strategies to break the cycle of hunger and poverty. He called for national unity in confronting the country’s challenges, emphasizing that hunger affects people across all ethnic and religious divides.

Obi urged the government to take swift action to combat food insecurity and implored Nigerians to unite in purpose to overcome the prevailing difficulties. He reiterated that hunger does not discriminate based on tribal or religious affiliations.
