‘Tinubu, Shettima should resign so Akpabio can conduct fresh presidential election’- Datti Baba-Ahmed

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has urged President Bola Tinubu and his Vice President, Kashim Shettima, to step down from their positions. Baba-Ahmed insisted that after their resignations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio should oversee a new presidential election.

He made this statement during an interview on Arise Television while responding to a question about the possibility of collaborating with Tinubu’s administration. Baba-Ahmed strongly asserted that Tinubu and Shettima were improperly inaugurated after the 2023 presidential election. As a result, the LP would not engage with what he viewed as an illegitimate government.

In his own words, he said, “Could Tinubu and Shettima please resign and allow the Senate President to organize a fresh election? They took office under questionable circumstances, and we will not cooperate with a government we consider illegitimate. If it’s not in accordance with the constitution, we won’t be a part of it.”

His statements came after a press conference held by the LP’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in which he criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Supreme Court for their handling of election-related matters.
