I used to hawk fruits in Lagos traffic – Crayon recounts ‘trenches to triumph’ story

The well-known singer, Charles Chibueze Chukwu, who is also known as Crayon, has shared his past experience of selling fruits in the traffic of Lagos.

During an interview with Saturday Beats, Crayon explained the inspiration behind the title of his album, ‘Trench to Triumph,’ revealing that it reflects his journey from humble beginnings to his current success.

“When I was seven years old, we relocated from Orile Iganmu in Lagos to a ‘face-me-I-face-you’ apartment in Ojo. We had about nine or ten people sharing a single room,” he recounted.

As the eldest child in his family, Crayon faced significant financial challenges while growing up. He had to deal with recurring school suspensions due to unpaid fees and even took the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) five times.

During that period, he was not only pursuing his music career but also assisting his mother at the market, where she sold fruits. At times, he even resorted to hawking fruits in the midst of traffic.

Transitioning from that challenging life to being signed by Mavin Records and progressing towards becoming a global superstar signifies his personal triumph. He went from struggling in the trenches to achieving success.
