Micah Richards, the former Manchester City Defender, has criticized Napoli’s media team for a recent controversial TikTok video that made fun of striker Victor Osimhen.
Napoli’s official TikTok account had recently posted a video featuring Osimhen dressed as a coconut with a sped-up voiceover. The video poked fun at Osimhen’s penalty miss in a Serie A 0-0 draw against Bologna the previous month. This video, which has since been removed, received significant backlash, with some people labeling it as racist.
Richards has expressed his opinion on the video, describing it as embarrassing. In an interview with CBS Sports Golazo, he stated, “Where do we start with that because, I’m confused. You’ve got a black guy and dressed him as a coconut. No matter what, whether they meant it to be offensive or not, surely you would just think in your mind, ‘You’ve got a black person, do we want to cover his body with a coconut?’ Like does that not go through your head at any point?”
He also emphasized that it might not be fair to generalize the entire Napoli organization, as the video could have been the result of the actions of one or a few individuals. Nonetheless, he found the video’s release to be quite embarrassing.
